Champion of Champions
Men
Most clubs have only one player in this championship - their previous year's club champion. We have no less than three - Tom McGuinness who was our club champion, his father John who was the county champion, and Michael Gomme who was the county under 25s champion.
Tom won his first match against David Dickson of Slough. John and Michael had first round byes. The next matches were fortunately not against each other, though Tom and Michael had to play against each other in the next round. Michael won, just, 21-19, and then had to play against John in the following round.
John beat Michael (21-19 again!) and then beat contenders from Headington and Bletchley to win the Bucks/Oxon section of the competition. On to Leamington!
John had a tough day at Leamington, playing two matches in the Fours on the same day as the Champ of Champs. He led the Four into the semi-finals, and won his first Champ of Champs match, but the fourth match on the same day proved too much, and he lost (in the quarter-finals) to Charlie Souter of Surrey.
Ladies
Our Ladies champion was Mary Smith, which is a tradition of the club. This year she won her first round of the champion of champions but had to allow a walkover in the second.
