Men - County Champions
In this contest we had four of the five teams in our division, and the fifth, Bob Doddington's team, were beaten in the first round by Roger Sheehy' team. Roger's team lost to David Grieve's and David's lost to Keith Young, Kevin Dwyer, Simon Cobb and Neil Farnish who now had to face a team from Marlow in the County finals. With a rejigged GX team caused by injury to GX's Simon Cobb 24 hours before the match, the Marlow four were probably favourites.
The lead changed hands many times throughout the game with Gerrards Cross holding a 2 shot advantage going into the last end. A Marlow brace meant the game went into an extra end.
In an amazing conclusion, worthy of the final, the lead changed a number of times before Marlow’s Andy Savin gave them a 2 shot lead with the jack surrounded. Following considerable discussion, GX skip Neil Farnish played a running bowl to perfection to take both his own and the jack into the ditch and despite a valiant attempt from Marlow skip Dave White, the GX team held on to win by the single shot, win the title and also qualified to represent Buckinghamshire at the National Finals in Leamington, where unfortunately they lost to a strong team from Nottinghamshire in their first match.
