Finals Sunday 8th September 2pm v Bletchley Town at Iver Heath

The Men were up against Bletchley Town in the final of the Bucks Cup and despite a tough start they came right back into the match and with 4 ends to play the scores were all level. However with Lady Luck not quite smiling on GX, Bletchley drew ahead in the final ends to retain their title.

Following a motivating team talk from captain Alan Price on Sunday 4th August the Cross started quickly and soon drew ahead. Despite a strong comeback in the second half of the game from the Marlow bowlers, Gerrards Cross won across all rinks with a cumulative winning margin of 38 shots.

Top rink went to Keith Young, Keith Patrick and Kirk Smith with a 30-4 winning margin.

This was a repeat of the 2017 final, unfortunately with the same result. The match was played on a fine sunny day, on a challenging green against a strong team: many of the players were familiar to us through playing on the same side in the Middleton Cup.

The match started well for Bletchley as each triple won the first end giving them a 7 nil lead.

Richard Reid's triple was 7-0 down at 5 ends; they closed the gap to 10-8 at 13 ends, but subsequently lost a four and ended 11-18 down.

Drew Briden's team had a closer match. They were 9 all after 13 ends, but in the last 5 ends they only got one shot to Bletchley's seven and ended 10-16 down.

Dave Ross' triple started well, were tied at 4 all after 5 ends, but a strong finish by their opponents they lost 9-20.

Triple 4 was a battle of the Presidents, with Kirk Smith on our team matched by Bletchley President Peter Benson. Again it was close at the beginning, but on this triple we then took the lead, winning five of the last six ends, and were 19-12 up at 17. By this time the other triples had finished, Bletchley's lead was unassailable and we conceded

It had been a fine day for the ladies match in the afternoon, but it turned miserable for the Bucks Cup, with a hint of drizzle in the cold breeze.

This obviously did Alan's team no good at all - they were losing 3-11 after six ends, but then an unlucky shot by the opposing skip gave us the mat, and two ends later we led by 12-11. It remained close on that rink, with the score at 21 all going into the final end.

Richard, Dave & Anthony also started slowly, with the score neck-and neck until the last few ends when they pulled away quite comfortably.

Fortunately the results at the other end were never really in doubt, and we had a clean sweep.

Good weather to play in, great green at our end, artificial at theirs. The difference seemed to be more of a problem for them than for us. It was almost dark by the time play finished at GX.

You'll notice that Captain Alan didn't play himself, along with other talented players including John, Kirk, and George. Nice to be able to achieve a win like this without them.
