wdalogo Watford & District Association

The Watford & District Bowling Association runs the usual series of knock-out competitions for men - Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours. Thers's a Two-Wood Singles and an Under 25s singles, both played on a single day, and an Australian Pairs. (In Aussie pairs the Leads start off with 2 bowls each, then the Skips play their 4 bowls and then the Leads complete the end with their final 2 bowls. In the next end the roles are reversed.Click on the links to see the draw and results.

W&D also runs leagues, but our schedule is currently too full to include them.

Fewer of our best players enter the W&D competitions than enter the county competitions, which perhaps gives other W&D entrants more chance of making it to the second round. Although they have play-on dates you can play in advance if your opponent agrees.

W&D also runs two-fours and three-fours knockout competitions - the Griffen Cup and the Ray Cup.

2022

GXBC had entrants in all the competitions listed above. Dave Simpson got to the sem-final of the singles. In the pairs Vinny Payne & Keith Patrick and Kevin Dwyer & Tim Jones lost in the quarter-finals, and a squad of Vinny Payne & Keith Patrick & Kevin Dwyer & Tim Jones got as far as the quarter-finals in the triples.

We lost in the first round of the Griffen Cup to Bushey, 26-33.

Ray Cup team vs Potten End Thursday June 23rd Away 6pm
Unfortunately the date clashed with the Bucks county pairs and so many of our best players were unavailable for this match. We did well to hold Potten End to a close finish, but lost 44-45

Ray Cup team vs Abbots Langley. Thursday June 9th  Home  6pm
Norman Gardner, Chris Commons, Simon Cobb and Stephen McAlister;
Ernie Rickets,. Derek Evans, David Hall.and Matt Hyde;
Peter Bevins, Hugh Russell, Bob Doddington and Michael Gomme.
Won 57-39. Heroes of the day were Peter, Hugh, Bob & Michael, who won 27-5 on their rink.

The next round will be played on 23rd June against Potten End, away, because it clashes with the Bucks County pairs so there is no room on our green.

griffen2019
2019 Griiffen Semi-Final team: back row Terry, Keith, Peter and Matt
Front row: Michael, Patrick, Roger and George

In 2019 we put teams into the pairs and triples contests, but they didn't make the semi-final.

We put in a Two Fours team for the Griffin Cup:

Saturday 3rd August 10am Semi-Final v Bushey - at Harperbury; followed by the finals v Berkhamstead

Patrick Johnson Peter Bevins
Roger Sheehy Keith Young
Terry Webb Michael Gomme
Matthew Hyde George Reid
With a 2 rink cumulative score format it was a close affair in the semi-final against Bushy but the Gerrards Cross side triumphed to the afternoon final against Berkhampstead.

Alas it was not to be their day and Berkhampstead just edged the final despite the Cross winning one one of the two rinks. It was a significant achievement for the Gerrards Cross side to do so well in their first season.

Thursday 27th June 6.00 pm v Potten End - Home

Patrick Johnson Roger Sheehy
David Hall Keith Young
Keith Patrick Simon Cobb
Dave Simpson George Reid
Won

Wednesday 12th June 6.00 pm v Garston - Home

Chas Stapleton Terry Webb
Peter Bevins Roger Sheehy
David Hall Simon Cobb
Andrew Briden Mathew Hyde
We won by large margins on both rinks, against last year's winners.

We had a bye in the first round.
