In Harrow we played the semi finals against a strong side from Ladygate, winning by 11 shots to progress to the finals where we met Bassetbury Manor from High Wycombe. In a high scoring game the triple of Gill Young, Chris Harvey and Keith Patrick won by the considerable margin of 23 shots and with Duncan Gauld's triple winning by 7 the trophy was as good as won by the Gerrards Cross side before the end.

Chess Vale are the only team to have beaten us so far. We lost badly at Chess Vale, so we needed a convincing win in order to end top of the Chiltern North section and make it into the quarter-finals of the whole league. In the event we won 8-2, which still leaves them ahead of us by one point, with one game each to go.

The result of the home leg against Amersham was never in doubt, with two of our rinks winning easily, but Chris Harvey's team had a nail-biting finish - we were one down going into the last end. Then their number two knocked the jack to the edge of the green next to one of their woods leaving us two down. David Grieve was our number two. He had a couple of tries at drawing it, and on the second achieved the shot - good, but not good enough, so he fired one down to kill the end or at least break it up for Chris. The jack stayed in, but came back into the middle, behind the other woods. Two shots to be proud of, but leaving us one down but with two seconds. Chris rose to the occasion, putting down a fine wood, taking out their shot and replacing one of our woods with his own. One up on the rink, and another three-rink victory for the Cross.

Won on all three rinks.

The Gerrards Cross CTL squad travelled to Amersham knowing that nothing more than a good win was vital following the unsuccessful start to the trophy’s defence the week before.

At the half way point, The Cross were in trouble with Only Duncan Gauld’s triple holding an advantage and a small one at that. However the cream rose to the top and Chris Harvey’s trip turned a 9 shot deficit into 7 shot winning margin to secure the first two points of the season. Duncan’s rink had been ‘nip and tuck’ for the entire game with just a shot separating the sides for 16 ends, but a strong last two ends saw them finish their game with a 4 shot win and another 2 points for the team.
Michael Gomme’s rink had also been close and were the last to finish. At 17 ends it was 17 all with everything to play for. Gillian Young’s wood held shot until an Amersham bowl took the lead with just the skips to bowl. Michael had tried to tease Amersham’s winning bowl out with two attempts that were wide and with the crowd wondering why he wasn’t changing hands as the shot was impossible from that side, his final bowl curled into the head, picked up the jack and drew the shot for an 18-17 win.

Whilst it may not have been quite as important as the Liverpool and Tottenham comebacks this week, it was the highest drama played out in Amersham that evening!

With all three rinks therefore winning and the aggregate scores giving Gerrards Cross a 12 point margin, the defence of the CTL is back on track.
