GXBC Men's Four - National Champions!

On 21st August the Fours were scheduled to play the semi-finals and finals. Our semifinal was a tense match against a Berkshire team. Our Men's Four - John and Tom McGuinness and Kirk and Dave Ross - were 10-all at 15 ends, 12 all at 17. They were two up going into the last end, and when it became apparent that they couldn't win it, Berkshire put the jack out of the rink to kill the end. So starting it again at 2 up our four won the end to secure their place in the finals against the other Berkshire team this afternoon.

It looked as if we had that one sewn up - we were 12-1 up after six ends. But then we dropped a seven and a couple of threes - 12-15 down at nine ends. But we pilled back - 17 all at 14 ends - and it was nip and tuck all the way after that. We went into the last end 3 up, but they held two until John took the shot. Championship won.

On the previous day our Men's Four won their first two rounds, beating Huntingdonshire 20-8 and Sussex 14-9. This took them into the last 16 in the country. They then won the next match against Derbyshire. The quarter-final couldn't start until John had finished his Champion of Champions match (which he won), and it proved to be a very tight game. John was bowling one shot down in the last end,
but he managed to get the win.

Early rounds:

In this contest we had five teams out of fourteen in our division. We are the only club to field more than one team.

Two of the teams - led by Alan Price and John McGuinness - made it to the County quarter-finals. Alan's team lost, but John - with son Tom and Kirk and Dave Ross - won comfortably, ensuring their place at Leamington.

They went on to beat their Bletchley opponents in the final by an even bigger margin, becoming County champions.

Ladies

We had three of the eight teams entered, but Margaret Poole's lost in the first round, and Katie Reid's lost in the second - to a team from Iver Heath, who on Tuesday 4th June beat Mary Price's team (Mary, Hannah McConnell, Julie Skelly, Courtney Harvey) in the division final, which is essentially the County quarter-final. Unfortunately they didn't make it to the County final.
